A TF2 Fanfic by SubbyP

[August 20, 1973]

Good morning, darling. Heh, well, I say morning, but it's so early, isn't it? The sun has not yet risen. I suppose four AM counts as morning, anyway.
I know, it seems like I just bid you goodnight, but three hours of sleep is enough for any man. I could do with less, but I do have to keep my concentration  at its best. Oh, that doesn't mean I have to stop talking to you, though!
Still, this problem is so intriguing, I never want to take breaks! It's so far beyond anything I've ever tried! When I solve it... ah, when I solve it...
Do you know where I put the solution of-- oh, there it is, never mind. I swear, lately it seems like I'd lose my head if it wasn't attached. Honestly...
I hope the city doesn't find out that I've been stealing their electricity. That must be our little secret, darling! I've got the generator up, but that's only for emergencies, and this takes so much current... not that I'm complaining, of course!
Hmm... my hands are shaking. Time for another IV! So convenient, I wonder why I didn't use them all the time. Now, where's... that... vein... Aha! Much better. Mmmm...
Music would certainly help me think right now. Oh well, would that I still had that record player. I got such a good price for it though. The real tragedy is that I had to sell my violin. Well, when this is all over, I will buy another one and I'll play for you every night. Won't that be wonderful? Just like the old days. "The old days"... heh. Two years doesn't really make days old. I know, two years already? The days just fly...
I'm so sorry I had to step out yesterday, and then I didn't tell you why... Please forgive me. I was just so angry... It was Remi and Bruce. They said they were in town on their way to Madrid, but I suspect Mac sent them to spy on me. As if I needed that!
They were so shocked when they saw me. Frankly, I'd be shocked too! I look a real fright right now, but of course there are more important things than appearance on my mind. Well, I shall be sure to clean myself up for you. Anyway, they were here to tell me to "just give up" because "it's hopeless" and blah blah blah. I should have killed them for saying that, but sentimentality counts for so much these days, and anyway, you'd have been angry with me, wouldn't you?
Well, it's not as if they're the first to say that nonsense, and they won't be the last. "Give it up, doctor. It's hopeless." Feh! They don't understand. They just don't understand. How could they know? They're all idiots. How could they know this kind of devotion? They will never make this kind of sacrifice. But I have yet to give all I can, my love. I have so much left, too much. So selfish, I'm so sorry. Oh my love, my strength, my heart, my hero. You have given me all that I will ever need. You have given me the love I need to conquer death. I will tear you out of death with my own hands, and we need never be apart again.
I am so tired, but I will never give up. I can never give up. Never...

[Translator's note: Thus concludes the last known audiotape log of Dr. Klaus Altmeyer von Taube. Dr. Von Taube was found dead of a combination of exhaustion, malnutrition, and overdose on various stimulants in his basement laboratory in Leipzig, Germany, two days after this tape was recorded. He died lying across a makeshift cryogenic tube containing the remains of his lover, one Yuri Kuznetsov, who had been killed two years prior in an unsolved drive-by shooting thought to be linked to their previous employers, [CENSORED]. According to the logs, his experiment notes, and the testimony of his friends, including the last people to see him alive (Bruce Mundy and Remi duFresne), he was attempting to bring Kuznetsov back from the dead. Neither had any living relatives. They were buried side by side.]
